Halloween weekend is right around the corner, which means it’s time to start thinking about a costume for all the holiday festivities you may be attending. However, shopping for a costume can get pretty expensive, which is why thrift shopping could be your best friend this Halloween season. Thankfully, there are plenty of thrift shops in Morgantown that offer a variety of options for your Halloween spirit.

Uptown Cheapskate

Uptown Cheapskate is a secondhand designer store located near Cheat Lake. The store offers a smaller selection of full costumes, but delivers extensive ideas for do-it-yourself Halloween costumes for those who prefer to make their own. Displays for these DIY costumes are scattered throughout the store to bring about one’s creative juices, or to be bought as is. Some inspirations include Forrest Gump, Han Solo and more. The fashion consultants there are also ready to help customers find the pieces they need in order to nail their outfit. The store sells other Halloween-related items, such as socks, t-shirts and other accessories that are Halloween-themed for those who want to feel spooky whenever they want.

Kimber Tyler, assistant manager of Uptown Cheapskate, said she finds a lot of value in making your own costume for Halloween.

“So, if you’re like me and you want to go out for Halloween a couple times, you need a couple different costumes,” Tyler said. “So you can come to a resale store and have the options to get three costumes for the price of one.”

Goodwill

Goodwill’s Halloween “Bootique” is definitely a thrift shopper’s dream. This dedicated section of Goodwill offers a variety of Halloween options. The store has a large array of adults, teenagers and children’s costume options, all at budget prices. Halloween décor, face makeup and costume accessories, such as fairy wings, are also available in this section of the store. Westover’s Goodwill even had a rack entirely full of Halloween-themed scrubs for nurses.

Salvation Army

Downtown Morgantown’s Salvation Army has a huge selection of children’s Halloween costume options at very low prices. There was an option for every child’s needs for Halloween, including fun accessories options such as gorilla masks, pirate hats and more.

Plato’s Closet

Having recently bought out a Halloween store, Plato’s Closet in Westover has a huge selection of unopened, but discounted costumes for less than $20. Used costumes brought in are also available at even lower prices. This location has a significant amount of variety in their costumes, all of which were gauged towards young adults and teenagers.

Gillian Mays, back stock manager for Plato’s Closet, said that she personally prefers thrifting for Halloween.

”To me, it’s one of those things where you only where it once, so why pay so much to buy a costume and only wear it one time, when you could thrift it or even make costumes out of the clothes we sell here?” Mays said.

So whether you buy a used costume or make your own, thrift shopping can be a fun and creative way to get the best bang for your buck this Halloween.
